Finding the pearl - Colour Music Video

Storyline:
Finding the pearl is an analogy to the quest of man to dive deep into the world to be able to see the unseen.

The task was to explore colour with music in an abstract way through a video.

This was my first video making project ever, for everyone else in our group too.

This was indeed a learning experience.

We had a notion to club all our experiences with colour as we were told not to personify colour and be as much abstract as possible, we cannot show any use of recognizable material or cannot use ourselves in the video.

Our group was not very comfortable with video making and editing software so we thought of relying on a video maker and editor app, and you can see all our stuffs out there.

Initially, i started doing stuffs on procreate which was not accepted as nobody else could use that and there will be a stark difference in the video when coming together.

But, later after getting review from Kuntal, we felt we could have used that to create more drama to engage people.

As we rejected the idea of going partially digital and partially through physical colours and other mediums, we started experimenting with colours and other materials that might give us colours.

We thought of many ideas initially, first one was showing that how differently we display colours without even using colours and make sounds using our body, for example clapping with one finger, two fingers, three....so on and come back the curve, whistling, beat boxing etc. We partially took that.

Then, there was an idea given by Krishna that we show the thread being dyed, and he took his colour wheel that he did in his colour wheel assignment and movied it in circular motion and did beat boxing.

I improvised it after getting inspired from the fact that white light has all the colours, the story line I created was a white thread getting dyed in colour and coming out together and then its burnt. Here, we could see white, then colours and then ends at black.

Me, and Anshul worked on it making the stopmotion of the thread going in, getting dyed. But, suddenly we felt if thread is being used it might be considered as a material. Also, not everybody could connect well as there were network issues as Krishna and Sagar are living in very remote areas of the country and Sagar was not even in good health.

I will agree to the fact that there was a huge disconnect.

I folded up my sleeves with Anshul and Anushka just the evening before we had to present with whatever raw videos we had for the beginning of the story and transform all our negatives into positive.

And we decided on putting up this idea of 'finding the pearl' as we had the sparkling of effervescent tablet that changed the magenta colour of potassium permanganate into yellow and I had the reflection of the flash, which to me was like pearl and Anushka perceived it as moon, though Krishna had initially mentioned that the juror will perceive it as flash.

While exploring, i was sitting in the balcony with the empty yellow bowl reflecting vibgyor and recorded that with windchime's music.

So, coming back to the idea of finding the pearl, the storyline as mentioned above, to depict that we started of as the sparkling effect with me creating sound from rubbing plastic to transforming the colour to yellow, with the yellow coloured water receding and becoming into a yellow coloured bowl and reflection light in the bowl giving out the rainbow colour how we see in a pearl and then comes the phase of mixing the colours to form a milky way like effect with the pearl in the middle.

Few of the raw videos experimenting with colours:

The points where we can improve a lot:

Coordination between group members.

Lack of drama, there were no ups and downs, everything was out there, happening in the middle of the frame, not using the stage well.

Too long with no drama made it boring for the viewer.

We could have explored much more if we would have done a detailed storyboarding.

We learnt a lot!!!
